CASE to Teach Workshops at Ball State

CASE has been invited by Kevin Klinger and Josh Vermillion of the Institute for Digital Fabrication at Ball State University to teach a series of workshops on parametric modeling, computational design, environmental analysis and digital fabrication.

These Scripted Flower Vases were completed by Steve with Jon Kontuly in 2006, as their final project for a computational design class taught by Chris Lasch of Aranda\Lasch at Stevens Institute. The goal of the project was to design a series of vases that demonstrated the algorithm used to generate the vases, didactically through their form. This was as much an editorial process, as a generative one: identifying the elements that best represent the algorithm, while still maintaining the form and function of a flower vase.

Alice Tully Hall in the NYTimes

It feels like only yesterday, but after several years and tremendous effort from numerous contributors, Alice Tully Hall reopens to positive first impressions from musicians and acousticians! From the initial photos, it looks like the geometric intent stood the test of time (and value engineering). Congratulations to Diller Scofidio + Renfro and FXFowle on an amazing project!

CASE teaches Orchestration workshop at Columbia GSAPP

I taught a workshop at Columbia GSAPP, along with Fed and Josh Emig from SHoP Architects, focused on the use of new technology in the production of full-scale building component systems. The workshop emphasized the use of these tools in order to facilitate better communication and collaboration, rather than the isolated study of technique.

CASE advises Ball State students

CASE was contacted by Kevin Klinger, Director of the Institute for Digital Fabrication at Ball State University to act as advisors to research projects dealing with digital fabrication and design computation. Kevin is one of the few academics that "gets it," and we are looking forward to working with him and his students in the future.

This project was completed by Dave in early 2005, prior to the formation of CASE, but it represents one of the services that CASE will offer firms that are dealing with complex geometric rationalization for design and fabrication.

Dave on Craftsmanship

I participated on the Craftsmanship Panel as part of the inaugural Design and Computation exhibit at SIGGRAPH 2008.

Steve presents at Digital Craft Symposium

In September 2007, I was invited to speak as part of a symposium and panel discussion exploring the role of craft in contemporary design. I presented my work on technology implementation and design computation for SHoP Architects, specifically my work on the precast enclosure system for the 290 Mulberry project.

Fed and Steve at LA Design Technology Forum

Steve and I, along with Nash Hurley, spoke at the Los Angeles Design Technology Forum in July 2007 about our work at SHoP Architects. We discussed the importance of R&D efforts within the building industry, especially architectural offices, commenting on issues of coordinated design and management, as well as, the role of environmental analysis in the design process.

Fed on Transformative Design Tools

In April 2007, I was interviewed by Architectural Record for an article called "Transformative Tools Start to Take Hold." The author outlines the broad basis of BIM and then describes through a series of case studies with owners, architects, engineers and builders, how BIM specifically impacted their projects.
